Battaglia to Yale; More Signings; Big Wins for Florida Women, Virginia Men; Fratangelo Takes French WC Lead; All-American Finals in Little Rock and Pelham

As I mentioned in last night's post, I spoke with blue chip Madison Battaglia recently about her college choice, and her decision to attend Yale is explained in this announcement on the Tennis Recruiting Network.

Only a few schools had posted signing announcements as of yesterday, but more have surfaced today.  LSU men have signed Rafael Lima Wagner of Brazil; UCLA men have signed Evan Zhu, Connor Rapp and Ben Goldberg; Texas men have signed Christian Sigsgaard of Denmark. Virginia women announced the signing of Rosie Johanson of Canada, who recently reached the quarterfinals of the Grade 1 International Spring Championships in Carson and  Furman women have signed Katarina Kozarov of Serbia.

The top-ranked Virginia men hosted No. 7 Wake Forest today in Charlottesville and came away with a 5-2 victory. Sophomore Henrik Wiersholm earned the fourth point for the Cavaliers with a win over Christian Seraphim at line 5.  Only an unexpected loss to Miami on Sunday could prevent the Cavaliers from claiming sole possession of the ACC conference regular season title.

The women's match of the day was in Athens, and it was No. 4 Florida getting the big road win, beating No. 3 Georgia 4-0.  The doubles point and straight-set wins from Anna Danilina, Kourtney Keegan and the clincher from senior Brianna Morgan gave the Gators a straightforward win. Florida wins the SEC regular season conference title outright with the victory.

At the $100,000 Sarasota Challenger, Bjorn Fratangelo(6) advanced to the semifinals with a 6-4, 6-1 win over qualifier Tomas Lipovsek Puches of Argentina and with Noah Rubin's 6-3, 6-0 loss to Guilherme Clezar of Brazil, takes the lead in the USTA French Open Wild Card Challenge. Fratangelo will face Mischa Zverev of Germany in Saturday's semifinal.

While only one American remains in Sarasota, two US champions are assured this weekend, with all eight semifinalists at the $25,000 Futures in Little Rock and the $25,000 women's event in Pelham from the United States.

In Little Rock, No. 3 seed Stefan Kozlov defeated No. 8 seed Evan King 7-5, 6-4 to advance to a semifinal clash with No. 2 seed Tennys Sandgren, who won via walkover against Christian Harrison.  The other semifinal features No. 5 seed Eric Quigley and unseeded Dennis Nevolo.  Quigley beat top seed Christian Lindell of Sweden 6-3, 6-3 today; Nevolo, who got into the main draw via a special exemption by reaching the semifinals last week in Memphis, defeated No. 4 seed Philip Bester of Canada 6-0, 6-1.

In Pelham, last week's winner in the Jackson $25K, Grace Min, is into the semifinals after a 1-6, 6-4, 6-2 comeback over top seed Alla Kudryavtseva of Russia today. Min, the No. 6 seed and the only seed remaining, will play Lauren Albanese, who squeezed past No. 4 seed Asia Muhammad 4-6, 6-3, 7-6(11).  Qualifier Taylor Townsend, a 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 winner over Olga Ianchuk of Ukraine, faces Bernarda Pera, who beat Melanie Oudin 6-2, 6-3, in the other semifinal.

The GT women beat Duke today but no add scoring had a big impact. Down a set and 2-3 in the second Tech won two straight games at 40 all. The difference in 4 - 3 versus 2 - 5 over 2 points is huge. This match decided the outcome of the contest. The match still lasted 4 hours. I sure hope they return to ad scoring or at lease a couple of ad points. Maybe 11 or 13 point games instead of 7.

No ad scoring and the silly 10 minute doubles has changed all of college tennis, not just this match. Upsets every weekend. It is no longer about who is the best. They need to rename it to Quick Tennis or something. It is not real tennis. Maybe more entertaining and unpredictable yes, but not real tennis based on the skills and physicality of tennis.
