D'Novo All-American Qualifying Nears Completion; Tulsa ITF Acceptance Update

Wednesday is a travel day for me and with the weather taking a decidedly autumnal turn here in Kalamazoo, I'm happy to be heading off to Tulsa, where I've had 95% great weather in my three previous trips there.

The ITA D'Novo All-American, in its fourth year in Tulsa, is down to the final day of qualifying, with the 16 winners of Wednesday morning's matches advancing to the main draw. Two pre-qualifiers, freshman Joey Burkhardt of Florida and sophomore Shuhei Uzawa of Ohio State, are still in the mix, having won five matches since Friday. Burkhardt will need to get by Halle Norberg of Ole Miss to reach the main draw, and Uzawa meets sophomore Jordan Rux of Baylor for that berth. Stanford freshman Bradley Klahn has also reached the final round of qualifying and will play New Mexico senior Johnny Parkes Wednesday. Sophomores Wil Spencer of Texas A & M and Dennis Lajola of Hawaii will renew their junior rivalry with a spot in the main draw on the line, while Michael Shabaz of Virginia and Arizona's Jay Goldman will meet in another all-American All-American match.

The doubles qualifying also began with two rounds today and eight teams will advance to the main draw Wednesday afternoon. The top two qualifying seeds, Omar Altmann and Bassam Beidas of Pepperdine and Matt Allare and Mike O'Connell of Ohio State, are still on course for a main draw berth.

For complete D'Novo All-American draws, see the ITA tournament website.

After the All-American winds down on Sunday, the ITF Pan-American Grade B1 takes over the Michael D. Case Tennis Center on the Tulsa campus. The winning Junior Davis Cup team of Evan King, Denis Kudla and Raymond Sarmiento are all expected to compete, but none of the three girls who won the Junior Fed Cup will be there. The most recent acceptances are listed on the USTA ITF tournament webpage.
